Lucius: To readmit or not

Read the story below and then follow the instructions.

Lucius is the father of four children. His wife died several years ago from a mysterious fever. Lucius is devoted to raising his children as Christians. The small Christian community to which he belongs was exposed to the Roman authorities by a spy who wormed his way into the group. At the trial before the proconsul, and after some coercion (torture,) Lucius decides in great mental anguish to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods. Almost all the other members of his community are burned at the stake, dying as Christians. Two years have passed and now Lucius wants to rejoin the Christian community.

The issue is whether Lucius should be readmitted to the church. If he is, should he do penance, and if so, what penance should he do?

As a group of about 4, make a list of at least 10 reasons why Lucius should be readmitted to the church or make a list of reasons why Lucius should not be readmitted. Your teacher will tell you which one to do. If you do the readmitted list, you should include whether or not he has to do penance and what penance he has to do. Everyone in the group should have the same list saved on their laptop. Be prepared to defend your views.
